Step 1: Cut the Black Card into a Pirate Hat Shape

Start with a sturdy piece of black card. You want it big enough to fit your child’s head comfortably. The classic pirate hat shape looks like a wide "M" or a triangle with the middle part folded down. Use scissors to cut the card into this shape. If you’re working with younger kids, you might want to prepare the shape in advance.

Step 2: Attach a Long Strip of Paper to Fit Around the Head

Next, cut a long strip of paper or card that will wrap around your child’s head to hold the hat in place. Attach this strip to the base of the hat using glue or tape. Make sure it fits snugly but comfortably. You can measure your child’s head beforehand to get the right size.

This strip is important for comfort and wearability, so take your time to get it right. It also gives you a chance to add some extra decoration if you like, such as stripes or dots.

Step 3: Stick on a Skull and Crossbones

No pirate hat is complete without the iconic skull and crossbones. You can print one out, draw it yourself, or cut it from white paper. Use glue or double-sided tape to stick it firmly on the front of the hat.

This simple addition turns your hat into a true pirate accessory and adds a fun, recognisable symbol that kids love. It’s a great way to practice cutting and glueing skills as part of your arts and crafts session.

Step 4: Paint and Add a Feather

Finally, let your child personalize their pirate hat. Use paint to add details or colour to the hat. You can also glue on a feather for a splash of flair. Feathers come in many colours and sizes, so pick one that suits your pirate’s style.

This step encourages creativity and makes each pirate hat unique. It’s a great way to finish your crafts for kids project with a personal touch.
